HOPING FOR SENIOR CALL-UP: Chris Hegarty

Chris Hegarty is hoping his success at club level with Rangers will help him get recognised by Northern Ireland senior manager Michael O’Neill.

Hegarty is well on his way to establishing himself in the Rangers defence – having this week signed a new two-year contract with the club.

The Northern Ireland Under-21 captain was delighted to pen a new deal and to have played such a significant part in the Ibrox drive to the Division Three title.

Next step will hopefully be a call-up to the full international squad with Northern Ireland.

“Without doubt I’d love to play for my country. However the back four is one of the best areas in our team. I’ll need to keep working hard to get there,” Hegarty said.

“I’ve just got to keep working hard to improve my standards. I can only look to the future now and keep doing my best.”

Hegarty praised club boss for Ally McCoist who has been a figurehead and spokesman for the club as well as manager during the past difficult 12 months.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the manager. He’s been there for all of the players no matter how they’ve been feeling,” Hegarty added.

“I’m grateful to the manager for having faith in me. I think I’ve played around 19 games now and I’m really happy with that.

“The experience has been great.”
