CLEAN SLATE
POSITIVE: Michael O'Neill
MICHAEL O’Neill insists he will leave no stone unturned as he plots Northern Ireland’s future.
O’Neill yesterday named an extended 24-man squad for next week’s friendly with Norway at Windsor Park.
It will be the new Northern Ireland manager’s first test after being named as Nigel Worthington’s successor last month.
A number of familiar names have returned to the international fold following some lengthy absences.
Defender Michael Duff and midfielder Dean Shiels are two notable inclusions, as is Newcastle United youngster Shane Ferguson whose future came under the spotlight under Worthington’s reign.
But for new manager O’Neill – who has also convinced Aaron Hughes to come out of international retirement – every player will come into consideration ahead of the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers later in the year.
“What happened in the past is irrelevant, it’s not a factor for me,” O’Neill said.
“All the players have been picked on merit and current form.
“Dean Shiels’ international career has maybe been a bit stop-start to date, but hopefully he can translate his club form onto the international stage.
“It’s also good opportunity for Shane Ferguson, and a good opportunity for me to see him first hand.
“Michael Duff is experienced, he is playing regularly in a good Championship squad and he was keen to be involved.”
