Cliftonville boss Tommy Breslin happy for players to answer critics

SPIRIT: Tommy Breslin

SPIRIT: Tommy Breslin

  • by Gareth Fullerton

Cliftonville boss Tommy Breslin believes his players provided the perfect riposte to their critics with Monday night’s convincing win over Glentoran.

George McMullan (2), Liam Boyce and Tomas Cosgrove got the goals to earn a 4-1 win over the Glens at Solitude – Stephen Carson got the visitors’ only reply.

Questions have been asked on Cliftonville’s title credentials following their defeat to Linfield last week.

Their lead at the top had been whittled down to just three points prior to last night’s game.

But after restoring their six-point advantage at the summit – and with a game in hand – Breslin said: “The players showed great character, especially after going a goal behind.

“People have been questioning their mental strength and I think they answered their critics tonight.

“It was important they responded after last week, and after Linfield and Crusaders winning at the weekend.

“I think we showed the quality we have in our squad and we played some good football.

“We have no fear – I think that is why we are still top. But there is a long way to go, and if we end up top at the end of the season it will be great.

“If we don’t then we will have given it our best shot.”
