Crumlin Stars take Border Regiment Cup honours

Crumlin Stars celebrate their win in the Border Regiment Cup final

TEN-man Crumlin Star retained the Border Regiment Cup by squeezing past Rathfriland Rangers by a single goal at Seaview on Thursday.

Barry McKeevey opened the scoring for Star in the seventh minute with a marvellous 25 yard free-kick. Rathfriland equalised soon after courtesy of a penalty from Stevie Coulter.

Star were reduced to ten men mid-way through the second half when PJ O’Neill received a red card for an off the ball incident, but that didn’t stop the Belfast team from claiming the Cup.

Goalscoring McKeevey turned provider in the 77th minute when he crossed for Mark Mooney to head home the winner.

Crumlin Star are the first team to win back to back Border Cup finals since Dee Heron’s legendary Killyleagh side in 2002 and 2003.
