Dungannon Swifts sign Ballymena striker James Costello on 18-month deal

SWIFTS DEAL: James Costello

SWIFTS DEAL: James Costello

  • by Gareth Fullerton

Dungannon Swifts have completed the signing of Ballymena United striker James Costello.

Costello has agreed an 18-month deal with the Swifts and could feature in Saturday’s Danske Bank Premiership clash with Lisburn Distillery.

Stangmore Park boss Darren Murphy said: “Everything happened very quickly and I am delighted to get James on board.

“James is the type of player we have been looking for. It is no secret we have been looking for someone to get goals.

“He is strong, can cover the ground and knows where the net is. He will be a big asset for us for the remainder of the season.

“It is a new challenge for James and sometimes that can bring the best out in players.

“I am grateful to Glenn Ferguson and Ballymena United for helping the deal go through so quickly. Hopefully James will be available for Saturday.”

Former Glenavon striker Costello joined the Sky Blues in June 2011 having been signed by former manager Roy Walker - scoring eight goals in 33 appearances during his first season at the Showgrounds.

He was ruled out until November this season with injury, but returned to help Ballymena lift the County Antrim Shield.

Ballymena manager Glenn Ferguson added: “We would like to wish James all the best in the future with Dungannon Swifts and make it known our thanks for his services whilst wearing the Ballymena United jersey.”
