Eddie Patterson believes midfielder David Howland will be a pivotal part of Glentoran’s Premiership fortunes next season.

Howland has ended weeks of speculation over his future by signing a new three-year deal with the Oval club.

The 27-year-old missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, but returned for the final game of the season against Portadown.

“David returned for that game to show the fans that he is back,” Patterson said.

“It was a frustrating season for him, but now he is back and he will be like a new signing for us.

“He is a quality player, and he is one of the more experienced members of our squad. It is vital we keep players like David at the Oval, so we are delighted he is staying.”

Meanwhile, Glenavon Football Club has played down reports claiming that Linfield will play their home European games at Mourneview Park.

It was reported on Monday that the Blues’ home Europa League fixtures were scheduled for the Lurgan venue due to ongoing work at Windsor Park.

Glenavon, in a statement, said: “Glenavon had an informal approach from Linfield several weeks ago about playing the game at Lurgan but no official request has yet been received despite having been promised. Therefore there has been no formal agreement at this time.”
