It was quarter final day in the U12 section of the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup and it kicked off at the Brandywell Showgrounds between Waterford and Donegal Schoolboys. As expected, the first ten minutes were tight with both teams jostling for possession and not wanting to give anything away. The breakthrough did come shortly after however with Donegal’s Conor Black using his pace to latch onto a long ball over the top and the striker made no mistake as he looked up and smashed the ball home to make it 1-0. Both sides continued to play nice football as the half went on and the hundred-strong crowd at the home of Derry City enjoyed the competitive nature of the game. It remained tight in the closing stages of the opening period and it was 1-0 as the half-time whistle sounded.

As the game resumed it was clear there was a semi-final place at stake as Waterford stepped it up and it got a little scrappier with fouls breaking up the play. There were very little clear-cut chances as the half continued and Donegal managed to limit Waterford to shooting from distance, protecting their precious 1-0 lead. In the closing stages the Munster side were desperate to equalise but couldn’t quite find the right passes. The last couple of minutes saw them throw everything at a resilient defence but in the end there was no equaliser and the Donegal boys held on to progress to the semi-final by a single goal.

Meanwhile the Under 10s and 11s have also reached the final stages. Glentoran Colts & Bertie Peacock Youths have reached the Under 10 final to be played at Leafair 3pm on Friday. Glentoran were comfortable winners against Carniny 3-0 and Bertie Peacock found it tougher before overcoming Ballymoney United 1-0. The Plate Final will see Sion Swifts play Tristar at 3pm.

At Under 11 it’s an all FAI affair in the final at Vale Centre (5pm). Previous winners, Letterkenny Rovers will be trying to gain back their crown, but won’t get it easy against crack Dublin outfit Peamount United. Letterkenny beat Coleraine 4-1 in their semi final. Peamount defeated Inishowen Youth League 4-0.

Sion Swifts have also made the final at this age group following a win against Trojans on penalties. They play Ballymoney United who also progressed on penalties - after a 2-2 draw with Oxford. The Vase final is between Carndonagh FC & Ballymoor FC.

In the Under 12 Cup quarter finals, in the early games there were wins for Donegal (1-0 v Waterford), Cavan/Monaghan Youth League (3-0 v Maiden City), TW Braga (1-0 v Shelbourne) & Derry Colts (on penalties v Hearts). The semi finals on Friday evening see Cavan/Monaghan play TW Braga at Killea and Donegal play Derry Colts at Oakland.

The new tournament for under 13 girls finished Thursday evening. Donegal Girls took the Hughes Insurance Foyle Cup title with a 2-0 win over neighbours Inishowen. The Plate final was won on penalties 4-3 by Sion Swifts after a 1-1 draw with the Inishowen B teams.

At Under 13 local side Derry Colts met their match losing 3-0 to Sheffield United. Sheffield meet Arklow town in semi finals with the winders playing Donegal or Coleraine in the final on Saturday.

The Under 14 groups concluded and the semi finalists are now known. The four semi finalists have only conceded 1 goal between them in the 12 games they contested all week - which makes the semi finals very intriguing. On Friday at 5pm, Donegal Schoolboys will play Celtic FC in a repeat of last year’s semi final which incidentally was delayed overnight due to thunder. Both teams will be hoping the superb weather holds this year. Maiden City Academy play Glentoran FC in Ardmore, also at 5pm.

the Under 15 final in Buncrana on Friday evening at 7pm will see NECSL from Co. Meath/Louth play local side Oxford FC in the final. NECSL beat Arklow Town on penalties whilst Oxford defeated Premiership side Norwich City 4-3.

Other finals on Friday evening will see the Under 17 final contested at 7pm at Ardmore. It will see a Derry team play a visiting team as either Derry City or Foyle Harps will play St Johnstone or Killen Rangers. At the same time in Instititute’s Riverside Stadium the Under 19 final will see either Ballymoor or Derry City play Partick Thistle or Strabane Athletic.
