Glenavon halt Crusaders in their tracks

GLENAVON 1 CRUSADERS 0

GLENAVON claimed their first win of the season on Saturday as they beat Crusaders 1-0 at Mourneview Park.

New signing Guy Bates bagged his second goal of the league season and that proved enough to see off Crusaders, who created little in front of goal and rarely threatened Blues’ keeper Andy Coleman

The home side got what was a deserved opener on 57 minutes when Marc Brown made a great interception and thumped a ball through the Crues’ defence to find Bates, who ducked past David Magowan and finished fantastically into the bottom corner.

The Blues could have extended their advantage but Andy McGrory was denied his first senior goal when his 83rd minute strike, which looked to be over the line, wasn’t given.

A Glenavon-dominated first half had offered little by way of chances, Conor Hagan spurning the best as his header was cleared off the line after great work by Gary Hamilton on the left flank.

It could have been more for Glenavon but one was enough as they doubled their points tally for the season.
