Diabetes UK Northern Ireland is joining with counterparts in the Republic of Ireland, Diabetes Ireland, by supporting their annual National Diabetes Cup on Saturday, August 27.

Diabetes UK Northern Ireland National Director, Dr David Chaney, said; ‘We are delighted to be working with Diabetes Ireland and supporting the National Diabetes Cup.

“This is the first year that children with Type 1 diabetes can register to join the National Diabetes Cup from Northern Ireland so we hope that families will sign up and enjoy what is set to be a fantastic day. If you have a child aged between 4 and 15 years old living with Type 1 diabetes then we would encourage you to take part as the day is less about the football skills and more about having fun with other children with the condition.”

There will be a 5-a-side tournament with fun coaching and games. There will also be workshops to give you a chance to talk to experts about Type 1 diabetes as well as a family BBQ and funzone to enjoy. It will be an action packed day at the Coolock Astropark in Dublin so we are looking forward to you joining us.’

Former Republic of Ireland defender and current Glentoran manager Alan Kernaghan, who also lives with Type 1 diabetes, said; “This is a great opportunity for children to get involved and get active as well as meet other children who are living with Type 1 diabetes.

“I hope that I am just another example that having Type 1 diabetes doesn’t have to stop you from pursuing your dreams and having the career you want, especially in sport. As with football, diabetes is about discipline, making good decisions and looking after yourself. “I hope children from Northern Ireland take part in this National Diabetes Cup. I’m sure they will learn not only about the value of sport but the value of knowing as much as you can about a condition that is reliant upon us managing it well. I wish all the children every success in this tournament and look forward to hearing about potential new signings for the future!”

The National Diabetes Cup will be taking place on Saturday, August 27, 11am – 5pm – Astropark Coolock, Dublin (just off M50 near airport).
