Glentoran footballers will swap their boots for boxing gloves this week in a novel fundraiser – believed to be the first of its kind in the province.

A number of the Oval club’s first and second teams have agreed to participate in a White Collar Boxing Night with proceeds going to support manager Eddie Patterson’s player budget and helping two local charities.

Called ‘Judgement Day at Moneyreagh’ the event which will comprise nine bouts involving fans and players is taking place this Thursday at La Mon House Hotel.

Joint organiser, Jim Welsh from Glentoran Community Trust said: “Players and fans have been training hard at Monkstown Boxing Club for the past six weeks, and we can now confirm a bill of nine bouts on the evening.

“We will have three exhibition fights from Monkstown Boxing Club, five bouts involving Glentoran players and Glentoran fans with the main event pitting Quarry Glentoran Supporters’ Club’s Johnny Poots against Raven Glentoran Supporters’ Club’s Stephen Beattie.”

Amongst the Glens’ players past and present who will be boxing will be Jay Magee, Jonny Addis, Steven Gordon, Kyle Mackie, Dickson Chisanga and Tim McCann.

“We’re all very excited about this. We believe it’s the first time a soccer club has organised a White Collar Boxing Night in Northern Ireland.

“The lads from the Seconds, Dickson Chisanga & Kyle Mackie, are fighting on behalf of the entire Seconds team, boxing to raise sponsorship money towards costly team kit and expenses next season.”

In addition to the event’s associated charity on the night – locally based SOS (Survivors of Suicide) the organisers hope to donate funds to four other charities.

There will be entertainment throughout the night, including a few sessions from local band the “Raven Micks”.

Tickets for the night cost £15, and tables of 10 can be reserved for £150.

They can be purchased online at the Glentoran Community Trust website, by emailing info@gctni.com, by contacting 07725211668 or through any Glentoran Community Trust Board member.
