SHAMROCK RVRS 5 GLENTORAN 1

Glentoran have it all to do in the Setanta Sports Cup after being steamrolled by Shamrock Rovers in a five-star display in Dublin.

The Glens were up against it from early on as Robert Bayly opened the scoring on seven minutes but when John McGuigan hit back there was hope of escaping with a draw.

However, the visitors failed to build on that and were punished for it as Kieran Waters, Stephen McPhail, Gary McCabe and Simon Madden all got on the scoresheet to round off the victory.

The tie may be returning to the Oval, but there looks to be too much for the Irish League representatives to do in order to dump the holders out of the All-Ireland competition – especially the way they played here.

From when Bayly volleyed in through to Madden’s close-range strike, Rovers were the better team and the horrendous conditions didn’t even halt their stride despite this being their first competitive game of the year.
