Gormley double helps Reds edge out Ards

Cliftonville sneaked past basement side Ards in a thoroughly entertaining 3-2 win at Clandeboye Park.

Joe Gormley grabbed his 29th and 30th goals of the season, while his striker partner Liam Boyce also found the net in a narrow victory. The Reds deserved the points, but Niall Currie’s Ards can be proud of their efforts.

Ross Arthurs gave Ards a dramatic league in the third minute, with an incredible long range dipping effort, the gave Devlin no chance

Ards’ dream lead only lasted for four minutes. A poor kick from Alan Blayney ricocheted off Joe Gormley for Liam Boyce to score.

The pressure finally told in the 31st when Donnelly delivered an inch perfect cross from the left flank, which an unmarked Gormley headed beyond Blayney from around 10 yards.

The third goal arrived in the 59th minute when Ryan Catney cut the Ards defence open for Gormley to skip by Blayney and roll the ball into the open net.

Ards set up a grandstand finish in the 69th minute when James Knowles scored against his old club, drilling the ball home from 10 yards.

Ards pushed for an equaliser, but Currie’s men were unable to fashion a third goal. Their chances suffered a fatal blow in the 88th minute when Sean Cleary received a second yellow card from referee Ross Dunlop.
