IFA looks forward with Nigel on board

IRISH Football Association President Raymond Kennedy believes Nigel Worthington will be a "massive asset" as we look to qualify for the World Cup in 2010.

Worthington was unveiled yesterday morning at the Wellington Park Hotel in Belfast after agreeing a new two-year contract.

The protracted negotiations between the IFA and the 45-year-old former defender were finally concluded this week, ending weeks of intense speculation.

Speaking at the press conference, Kennedy aired his delight at Worthington signing up for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

“As President of the IFA, I am delighted that we have been able to re-appoint Nigel as manager of our team,” he said.

“It is also very important that Nigel has kept his backroom team of Glynn Snodin and Fred Barber.

“Nigel, as everyone is aware, is a very experienced coach, and I have no doubt he is a big asset who will take us forward in the forthcoming World Cup campaign.

“He will meet the challenge head on and build on our past experiences.

“He has a good rapport with the team, and I have no reason to believe that won’t; continue. Nigel has passion. Nigel has pride. And I believe that the IFA has made an excellent decision.”

Meanwhile IFA Chief Executive Howard Wells also believes the Association has concocted the perfect cocktail for success by re-appointing Worthington.

“I think looking at the attendance this morning, you can see that there is as much enthusiasm among the media as there is with Nigel and the IFA. It is a mark of respect to Nigel and the IFA, and I would like to thank the commitment of the press in the pass,” Wells said.

“We are at another crossroads of excitement. I think it will be an interesting couple of years for the IFA and Nigel in particular.

“I think we have got the thing right. Nigel’s commitment over the initial six games was superb, and I think the way he has a feel for this job is vitally important.

“He has a great rapport with many people as well, and it works both ways.”
