Kirk calls on Whites to build on massive win at champions
LISBURN Distillery manager Paul Kirk is refusing to let his players indulge in last week's triumph over champions Linfield.
The 2-0 victory at Windsor Park caused a few shockwaves in the JJB Sports Premiership, with most of the post-match hype surrounding the latest blow for David Jeffrey's Blues.
Kirk was understandably delighted with the Whites' showing – their first win in the league since a 2-1 triumph over Ballymena United on September 6.
Despite the lacklustre form in recent weeks, Distillery remain in fourth place and only four points off the leaders Glentoran.
"Last week was a massive confidence booster for the lads. Winning at Windsor Park is a big result for us, and I would urge my players to now build on that," Kirk said.
"We had lost our four previous games, so three points from 15 is disappointing. But I said to the lads that we would draw a line under our recent form and start afresh, and look what they did at Windsor.
"It was a great result against Linfield, regardless of what people have been saying about the Blues' form and results. Taking three points from Windsor Park isn't an easy thing to do, but we managed that."
Despite the new-found success at the club, Kirk is quick to temper any over-enthusiasm ahead of today's clash with Ballymena United.
"It is only three points, albeit a big three points," the Whites boss added.
"We know we have to build on that performance and the result. Our form before last Saturday was poor, but we got a number of player issues sorted out and started again. I got a great response from the lads but it is important we maintain our momentum."
This afternoon a rejuvenated Ballymena United arrive at Ballyskeagh, fresh from last week's draw with Glentoran and a 2-0 victory over champions Linfield.
And Kirk is wary of the threat posed to his players.
"Ballymena have taken four points from the Big Two. That should be enough to press the warning buttons," he said.
"We have had them watched and they seem to be turning the corner. Kevin Kelbie is scoring goals again and Roy Walker is bedding in as a manager. They are in the midst of a revival so we know we are in for a difficult afternoon."
Sky Blues boss Walker is also aware of the potential pitfalls for a side coming off the back of an encouraging result.
"We set the benchmark with our recent performances, but it is vital we don't let those standards slip," he said.
"I was very pleased with my players' attitude against Linfield and Glentoran, but now we have a new challenge against Distillery.
"They are coming off the back of a great result against Linfield at Windsor Park, so I don't think we need reminding just how tough a game we can expect at Ballyskeagh on Saturday.
"We have to build on our mini-revival, and I am confident the players now realise just what is expected.
"The last couple of weeks have been encouraging but we must push on."
