KNIGHT READY TO ROCK AGAIN...
Leon Knight
LEON Knight insists he is ready to get ‘back down to business’ after signing an 18-month contract with Glentoran.
Knight finalised terms yesterday after the Glens reached agreement with Coleraine over a fee for the player – believed to be in the region of £7,500.
It is a welcome development for a striker whose career had been left in limbo over the past six weeks.
Knight’s last game for Coleraine was back on December 20 – ironically against Glentoran.
Issues surrounding travel and accommodation costs arose after he returned to live in England before Christmas.
It has been a frustrating impasse for the 29-year-old, but now he is ready to reignite his career with new club Glentoran.
“I am delighted to finally get everything sorted,” Knight said last night.
“It has been a frustrating month or so for me as I haven’t been playing football. As a footballer all you want to do is play, but obviously that wasn’t happening.
“So to get the move to Glentoran finalised is great and I can’t wait now to finally get out there.”
Knight had declared his desire to play for Glentoran at the start of the season, comments which resulted in Coleraine taking disciplinary action.
Former Showgrounds stars Stephen Carson and Darren Boyce both made the move to the Oval last summer, prompting Knight to voice his interest in joining them.
It has been a baptism of fire for both Carson and Boyce this season, with the Glens enduring a nightmare campaign which has seen manager Scott Young resign following their embarrassing defeat to Newington YC in the Irish Cup.
They are currently languishing in fifth place in the Carling Premiership with only European football to realistically fight for.
Despite the turmoil that has enveloped the club, Knight insists the club remains an attractive destination for players.
“They are a big club with a proud history and reputation,” he said.
“They say form is temporary but class is permanent, and I think Glentoran are just going through a rough patch. But they will get through it.
“We just have to get on with things and try and finish the season on a high. I am sure the players are disappointed with the way the season has panned out. I am sure they all want to do better.
“Hopefully I can come in and add something to the squad and help them get up the table.
“There is plenty to fight for this season, especially Europe. Glentoran have played in Europe for countless years, it is in their DNA.
“So that has to be a key target this season. I just have to focus on playing well and hopefully getting the fans onside.
“We have Donegal Celtic on Saturday and I can’t wait. I am buzzing now I have made the move and I am excited about getting out there and playing.”
