Liggett doubles up in Whites win
GLENTORAN’S season is simply going from bad to worse!
Following their embarrassing Irish Cup exit – beaten by amateur league side Newington – they again flopped in front of home fans in last night’s Carling Premier League game against battling Lisburn Distillery at the Oval.
Goals from David Cushley and Gary Liggett, who hit two, made it a most uncomfortable 90 minutes for caretaker boss Roy Coyle – back in the dugout for the first time since 2006.
Even though Martin Murray did give the Glens a glimmer a hope with a second half strike – it was a mere consolation effort.
John Cunningham’s Distillery soared from the blocks and new boy Andy Kilmartin required a mere three minutes to impress the small pocket of visiting fans, wriggling his way along the byeline before crossing for Neal Gawley, who shamefully blasted the ball over the crossbar from eight yards.
The Whites, wearing black last night, went close again on nine minutes following Aidan O’Kane’s clumsy challenge on Gary Liggett.
Gawley’s 25 yard free kick clipped the top of the bar with Hogg seemingly beaten.
Then Cushley’s endeavour on the right created another opening for Gawley, but he just failed to get a touch even though he appeared to have his jersey tugged as he attempted to make contact.
The inevitable breakthrough arrived on 32 minutes when Jamie Callacher bundled over Liggett on the edge of the box. Cushley stepped up to crash home an unstoppable free kick – his fifth goal of the season.
Glentoran responded with Jason Hill flicking a David Howland corner kick over the top – their first meaningful raid.
Distillery again picked up the momentum after the interval. Gary Thompson easily robbed Colin Nixon before letting fly from 20 yards. Hogg was relieved to see the effort graze his post.
The Whites struck again on 57 minutes. Thompson threaded an inch perfect pass into the patch of Liggett, who gracefully rolled the ball under the body of Hogg.
Glentoran reduced the deficit five minutes later when substitute Martin Murray sent a blistering drive well out of the reach of Brennan.
Liggett finished the job in injury, latching on to a Sean Ward error before cooly slotting the ball under the legs of Hogg.
