An opportunist goal by Timmy Adamson – which led to Ports manager Ronnie McFall being sent off – separated the teams in this usually tight Ports-Crues encounter.
McFall angrily told linesman James Eakin that he missed two “off-sides” as the ball bulged the net – and he was so vociferous in his protests that Eakin told referee Raymond Herington, and McFall was pointed to the pavilion.
The incident spiced up what wasn’t really an exciting match, with both defences on top – especially Crusaders, who – with Coates and Paul Leeman keeping tabs on the potent Ports’ strike force - just about shaded it.
One goal sealed it - and what a goal it was. Coates set it up with a great move down the left, and Adams swept in to finish it at the near post.
