Morrow is top player for month of January

Crusaders' Chris Morrow

Crusaders' Chris Morrow

Chris Morrow’s silverware collection is steadily growing this season – and he hopes the success continues in 2012.

Morrow – whose match-winning goal helped Crusaders lift the League Cup last month – has been named Carling Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Player of the Month for January.

The playmaker is enjoying a stellar New Year, having also signed a two-year extension with the Crues.

He has also been awarded a testimonial at Seaview.

“It is great to add this award to the trophy,” said Morrow.

“We had a great month, progressing in the Irish Cup, and staying unbeaten in four league games.”

Morrow was the hero of the Hatchetmen with his winning strike against Coleraine in the League Cup final.

It was the midfielder’s first cup final success with the club, having missed out on their historic Irish Cup win two years ago because of injury.

“It is hard to believe, but the League Cup is the first final I have won with the Crues,” he added.

“We lost the previous four finals I played in, so it was great to get the goal and the medal.”

Dungannon Swifts’ new signing Sean Friars was the runner-up, while Coleraine defender David Ogilby was third.

p BARRY Johnston made it four Goal of the Month awards in a row for Cliftonville, with his spectacular strike against Dungannon Swifts.

The midfielder’s 20 yards volley in the live Sky Sports game was voted the Carling January Goal of the Month by the Northern Ireland Football Writers.

Johnston’s goal not only impressed the NIFWA, but also Sky Sports, who featured their goal on their flagship football show Soccer AM.
