Niall McGinn can’t hide disappointment after Azerbaijan stalemate

Northern Ireland's Niall McGinn

Northern Ireland's Niall McGinn

Niall McGinn was left searching for answers following Northern Ireland’s late, late show on Wednesday night.

Michael O’Neill’s side were intent on claiming a first victory in their World Cup qualifying Group F.

Instead, they were forced to rely on David Healy’s 96th-minute equaliser after going behind to Rauf Aliyev’s fifth-minute opener for the visitors.

“We were unlucky,” McGinn said.

“We created chance after chance but couldn’t get the breakthrough until it was too late.

“We wanted to get the win but we had to settle for a point which is disappointing.

“It was obviously fantastic to play in front of the fans at home again, they were just great.

“They stayed until the last minute and know, from the performance in Portugal, how hard we are working. They cheered us on to the end and it was good to see.

“Although the result wasn’t what we were looking for, I thought the performance from the first minute to the last was very pleasing.”
