ISRAEL 1 N IRELAND 1
Northern Ireland completed their World Cup qualifying campaign with a spirited draw against Israel in Tel Aviv.
Steven Davis’ equaliser in the second half helped ensure Michael O’Neill’s side finished fifth in Group F.
Eden Ben Basat gave Israel the lead on 43 minutes with a header into the bottom corner from 10 yards out.
Captain Davis equalised with a rasping shot from the edge of the box which curled away from the goalkeeper into the net.
Martin Paterson almost netted a winner, but Dudu Aouate saved brilliantly.
O’Neill made six changes to his starting line-up from the 2-0 defeat in Azerbaijan for the final game of the campaign.
Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley and Oliver Norwood were suspended while Shane Ferguson, Chris Brunt and Shane Ferguson dropped to the bench.
Daniel Lafferty, Chris Baird, Sammy Clingan, Corry Evans and Niall McGinn came in, along with Bradford defender Rory McArdle, who made his first competitive start at centre-half.
Israel broke the deadlock with two minutes of the first half remaining.
Eyal Meshumar crossed from the right and Ben Basat was left unmarked to head home for his sixth goal in seven qualifying games.
The equaliser came from Davis’ right foot for the midfielder’s fifth international goal.
Jamie Ward was the provider, playing the ball into the path of Davis whose well-struck shot edged out of reach of the keeper.
