Second half goals from centre backs Garry Breen and Emmet Friars gave Portadown a 2-1 win at Clandeboye Park as they continue their European charge.

Ards took the lead mid-way through the first half thanks to a fine goal from William Faulkner, but they were undone by two set-piece goals at the start of the second half.

Thankfully for Niall Currie’s men, Warrenpoint Town’s defeat at the hands of Cliftonville mean they remain just five points behind.

Portadown grabbed a deserved equaliser just two minutes into the second half, when Garry Breen found the net. Ards failed to defend a Chris Casement corner, allowing Breen to find space at the near post and flick the ball home.

It was no surprise when the Ports made it 2-1 in the 61st minute, when Ards were once again undone by a Casement corner-kick. This time it was Emmet Friars who rose highest in the box to head the ball beyond Blayney.
