Pat McGibbon’s summer rebuilding programme continued at pace this week with three additions to the Portadown panel.

The return of Chris Casement to Linfield on Tuesday marked the latest high-profile exit from Shamrock Park but McGibbon maintains his faith in the revamped squad.

Goalkeeper Chris McCaughey has signed to provide competition for the experienced David Miskelly - with international clearance expected to be processed before the weekend over wingers Eoin Kirwan and Sam Simpson.

McGibbon has also added Stephen Hughes from Warrenpoint Town and Niall Henderson, the former Glentoran midfield man, over the past week.

“It has been a busy summer with players coming in and others leaving but I am pleased with our progress over pre-season,” said McGibbon. “I have been talking to players and obviously been aware of the situation with someone like Chris Casement but my focus has been as much as possible on the football pitch.

“Deals have been agreed for Eoin and Sam, with both connected to the club thanks to Vinny Arkins’ links in the Republic of Ireland.

“Sam comes from the Leinster Senior League and has represented Irish Universities.

“Eoin was on the books at Cambridge United before injury, with both wingers and impressive so far across pre-season.

“Chris McGaughey has also come in and done well and the idea is to have competition for places across the group.

“Mark McAllister scored two goals on his first game after holidays and Garry Breen has trained as hard as anyone.

“People like Brendan Shannon, Niall Henderson and Stephen Hughes have come in and looked like real winners.

“It is about existing players and new signings blending together as quickly as possible.”
