Redemption is earned by Flynn after midweek win

GERRY Flynn believes Wednesday's victory over high-flying Crusaders provided some form of redemption for the Newry City boss.

A stuttering start to the new season saw the Bordermen bag only two victories from 11 outings prior to the midweek triumph over Stephen Baxter's side.

Flynn admits he was starting to doubt his role at Newry following last Saturday's goalless draw with Bangor, but is now confident of a welcome revival in the weeks ahead.

"I knew we would beat Crusaders because I knew the players would respond," he said.

"I had a few questions to ask myself after the Bangor result, and it was a depressing evening last Saturday. But come Monday and when we went back to training, it was like a new start and thankfully the players responded in the midweek game.

"I want this club to succeed, and if I thought I couldn't help them then I would walk away. But I have confidence in my ability, and from what I saw on Wednesday against Crusaders it has given me encouragement.

"But we can't have one high, we need to continue the good form and get more positives in the weeks ahead."

Standing between Newry and successive victories is a Coleraine side intent on bolstering their own league credentials.

David Platt's Bannsiders have also struggled to find consistency in recent weeks, but still sit in fifth place and only five points off leaders Glentoran.

Newry can leapfrog Coleraine if they earn victory at Ballycastle Road this afternoon, and Flynn admits that should be an incentive for his players.

"We can actually go into fourth if results go our way. So come 5pm on Saturday we could be up the table and the club will be buzzing. I will be the best thing since sliced bread," he added.

"Compare that to 5pm last Saturday when everyone was disappointed and depressed after the Bangor result.

"So a week can be a long time in football.

"We have to push on from Wednesday's win against Crusaders and try and get successive victories. That's the trick.

"Everyone is beating everyone else in this league, and various teams have already gone through bad patches. Hopefully we have gone through ours and we can rise up the table.

"You can throw a blanket over the top seven or eight teams in the Premiership, so there is a fine line between the top and bottom."
