History beckons for Ally McCoist’s Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon when Ayr United visit Ibrox.

Victory will secure an all-time club record of 20 consecutive wins in all competitions – something that not even Walter Smith’s great team of 1992-93 achieved, and nor did the ‘Invincibles’ of 1898-99 who recorded a perfect 100 per cent league record.

McCoist was at pains to stress – as he has done consistently - that he believes a perfect record is extremely unlikely.

“I don’t think that’ll be the case. Every game has potential for a hiccup from our point of view. Away games in particular are extremely difficult. Our two games this year at Forfar – the one in the League Cup when they beat us and the league game where we won 1-0 – tell you that,” he said.

“They were incredibly tight and we were 3-1 down to Brechin at half-time before we managed to come back and win that one 4-3.

“Home games to be honest are not exactly a formality either.”
