IT never rains but it pours right now as far as Ally McCoist and Rangers are concerned.
Right on top of Wednesday’s elimination from the Scottish League Cup at the hands of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, the Ibrox boss is faced with an injury-ravaged squad for the visit of Alloa Athletic on Scottish Cup business on Saturday afternoon.
Northern Ireland international Dean Shiels and Andy Little, along with Lee Wallace and Lewis MacLeod are all injury doubts – and with David Templeton unlikely to be ready it leaves McCoist with the bare bones of an already threadbare squad.
The midweek debacle exposed serious weaknesses in the Ibrox defence – weaknesses that Alloa, currently lying second in Division Two and having won their last six League games, may well be capable of exposing as Ally acknowledged.
“It’s a game against a team from the lower leagues who plays as good a game of football as any other team in the lower leagues.
“They had a great year last year and they’re having another great one this year.
“They scored five goals last week (against Albion Rovers) and as a team and a club in a rich vein of form, they’re full of confidence and they’ll be extremely dangerous opponents.
“That said, it’s a home game in the cup against another team from a similar league and situation to us.
“In that respect, we should be very hopeful we can go out and get a result.
“It’s probably a game where if we win, we won’t get too many pats on the back and if we lose we’ll get a bit of stick.”
