Rory Patterson may have faltered in front of goal during last week’s first leg against Aberystwyth Town at the Brandywell, but the Derry City striker certainly made amends on Thursday night in Wales having netted a memorable hat-trick.

And the striker certainly saved the best until last with two goals during the final five minutes, the last of which was a cheeky spot-kick which capped a fine performance at Park Avenue.

With first half goals from Michael Duffy and Barry McNamee, the ‘Candystripes’ ended the tie Strabane man’s treble was highlighted by a cheeky chip three minutes from the end as Derry mauled Aberystwyth Town 5-0, for a record 9-0 aggregate score in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

They will now face Shaktyor Soligorsk from Belarus in the second qualifying round – the first leg of which is next Thursday night at the Brandywell.

In the 11th minute Michael Duffy was well placed to head it high into the net to make it 1-0. Then in the 13th minute it was 2-0 after a Barry McNamee header.

On the hour when Patterson made it 3-0, before making it 4-0 from an easy tap-in.

Derry had the final say in the 87th minute when Timlin was brought crashing down to earth inside the area and Patterson hit it home.
