Brighton and Hove Albion manager Sami Hyypia believes new signing Aaron Hughes can help drive the club towards its promotion goal next season.

Hughes – who was recently released by Queen’s Park Rangers – has joined the Sky Bet Championship side on a one-year deal.

Hyypia believes the former Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Fulham defender can help the Seagulls make a genuine push for promotion to the Barclays Premier League next season.

“Aaron is a great addition,” said Hyypia – who has made the international defender his first signing since succeeding Oscar Garcia at the Amex Stadium last month

“We wanted to bring in another experienced defender, and he fits the bill, having played at Premier League, Champions League and international level.

“I have played against Aaron a few times during my time at Liverpool and also for Finland. He has a very good footballing pedigree, is an intelligent player, and has a great mentality and good approach to the game.”

Hyypia added: “Aaron has that experience I wanted to bring into the squad.

“Alongside our other senior players, he will help our younger players continue to develop and progress in the first-team squad.

“Overall, we still have some work to do in terms of recruitment, and we are all working hard to do that. This is a good start and Aaron is a great addition.”
