ST. PAT’S ATHLETIC 1

ST. Patrick’s Athletic brought Derry City crashing back to earth following last Monday night’s impressive victory in Limerick.

However, the goal was of Derry’s own making when midfielder, Philip Lowry, lost possession in a vital area during the early stages of the opening period.

After a first half which saw very few clear-cut chances created, both defences were well on top with St. Pat’s having gone closest to scoring in the 45th minute.

Killian Brennan’s free-kick from 30 yards crashing off the upright with Ger Doherty struggling.

However, two minutes after the re-start Liam Buckley’s side broke the deadlock.

Lowry, whose duties had centred on containing the contribution of Keith Fahey, lost possession to the former Republic of Ireland international and he sent Aaron Greene scampering clear in the 47th minute, the winger hammering the ball high into the Derry net.

Derry piled on the pressure afterwards with Patrick McEleney was unlucky when his left-foot drive sailed agonisingly over the crossbar in the 63rd minute.

However, Derry really should have levelled matters in the 74th minute. A cheeky back-heel from Michael Duffy sent Sean Houston through into a one-on-one with Brendan Clarke but the Pat’s keeper blocked the shot.

As Derry continued to push forward, Clarke parried a powerful McEleney shot before Barry McNamee drove the rebound wide of the upright when he should have done better.
