Ryan Catney is hoping to exorcise some demons by helping Cliftonville claim their first title in 15 years.

Catney was part of the Reds squad that capitulated five years ago with the Gibson Cup at their mercy.

Sitting top of the table with six games remaining, Cliftonville could only muster one point from 18 to eventually finish third behind champions Linfield.

It was a painful experience for Catney but he is confident history will not repeat itself in 2013.

Cliftonville can boast a healthy 12-point lead at the top of the Danske Bank Premiership with 10 games remaining.

“I remember that year we lost the title. To be honest, I hate talking about that experience,” he said.

“It is a bad memory and one we want to avoid repeating. We got ourselves in a decent position but then the wheels fell off.

“It was a steep learning curve, but we have a different squad now and a different mentality in the changing room. I have no doubts the lads can cope with the rest of the run-in.

“Bressy (Tommy Breslin) keeps us positive all the time and he let’s us go out and play football. He believes in us and we believe in each other, so we have all the ingredients to go on and lift the title and that’s what we aim to do.

“The camaraderie and spirit in the squad is unbelievable, so we are looking forward to the rest of the season.”
