'Setanta Cup has a future': Patterson
CLIFTONVILLE boss Eddie Patterson says the Reds have a future in the Setanta Sports Cup.
The Solitude boss was speaking after Linfield chairman Jim Kerr threw the Blues' participation in the all-Ireland competition into doubt after it was revealed there were plans to introduce Saturday fixtures.
Kerr claimed any weekend games would be a "further intrusion into our domestic season".
Speaking last night, Reds boss Patterson said efforts were being made to satisfy clubs from north and south of the border.
"I think there have been difficulties playing midweek games, especially for us having to travel to Cork this year," he said.
"We were having to travel on the Sunday, the day after playing a Premiership fixture, and players were having to get time off work. It added a lot of expense to the club and the players.
"So the competition certainly has its pros and cons, but I think when looking at the Cork scenario then weekend games would be more suitable."
This year's Setanta Sports Cup heralded a new format to the competition, with three group games being played at the end of the Irish Premiership season, with another three at the tail of the eircom League campaign.
It was an idea intended to cater for clubs from both leagues.
"This season they have found a balance between the two leagues," Patterson added.
"I remember when Linfield got to the final last time, and they were out on their feet. It had been a long season for them. It was a tremendous achievement, but it took its toll.
"The organisers have changed the format this time and it has helped, and you see Glentoran now in this year's final. So you have clubs from both leagues in the final which is good."
