Shane exit leaves Ron perplexed
Portadown's Shane McCabe
‘OUT of the blue’ is how Ronnie McFall has described Shane McCabe’s decision to quit Portadown.
McCabe has announced his decision to resume his inter-county GAA career with Fermanagh.
The Ports midfielder spoke with McFall last week before confirming his exit yesterday.
It is a significant body blow for Portadown who are sitting third in the Carling Premiership and preparing for tonight’s trip to Ballymena United (7.45pm).
McFall already has Tim Mouncey out for the reason with a knee injury, with numbers already thin on the ground as they look to mount a serious title drive this season.
“It has come totally out of the blue, McFall said.
“He mentioned it last week and we tried to convince him to stay, but his mind is made up.
“It is disappointing, and I don’t know if Shane will ever return to football. The gaelic season lasts until later in the year so I don’t know what he will do then.
“We retain his registration and he is contracted to the club for another 18 months, but obviously this breaches that contract.”
McFall will not be bringing any new faces before the end of the transfer window tonight.
“We can’t do anything,” he said.
“Shane’s departure has left us with a big hole. We already have Mouncey out and there are others injured.
“We just have to get on with things, but this certainly doesn’t help.”
Looking ahead to tonight’s game at the Showgrounds, McFall said: “We just have to try and pick up as many points as we can.
“We know it won’t be easy but we just have to battle on and see where it takes us. But our limited numbers will not help our cause.”
