DUNGANNON 0 LINFIELD 1
Linfield got back to winning ways today with a narrow but deserved victory at Stangmore Park.
A 46th minute strike from Ivan Sproule was enough to see off Dungannon Swifts.
The former Northern Ireland midfielder followed up his strike against Institute last weekend with his second of the season today.
Swifts never gave up but lacked the nous to break down the visitors’ well-organised defence.
Dungannon had the game’s first chance in the third minute, but Jamie Douglas’s free-kick was deflected just wide.
Kris Lowe also saw a couple of shots blocked in quick succession in a bright opening from the home side.
But the clearest chances of a goal-less first half fell to the visitors.
A superb ball from midfield sent Aaron Burns clear but he fired straight at the goalkeeper, with Sproule unable to convert the loose ball.
An eye-catching passing move between Stephen Lowry and Warren Feeney ended with Lowry seeing a shot blocked by Andy Coleman.
Jimmy Callacher then watched a curling effort drift just wide.
The deadlock was broken within a minute of the restart. Matthew Clarke supplied the cross and Sproule’s low strike found the far corner.
Dungannon brought on Abby Sanusi and he tried his luck with a curling effort which went just wide.
Linfield had another chance when Aaron Burns drilled a low effort narrowly wide of the post after the home side lost possession in a dangerous area.
Gary Liggett headed a late chance wide for Dungannon.
The striker also had claims for a penalty after a challenge involving the goalkeeper but it went unpunished.
