Northern Ireland Under 21 star Andy Mitchell is searching for a new club after being released by Rangers.
The Gers confirmed on Friday that they have cancelled Mitchell’s contract by “mutual consent”.
The versatile player made eight appearances for the Light Blues, the last of which was in their League Cup defeat by Forfar in August, and returned from a loan spell at Annan last month.
Manager Ally McCoist told the club’s official website: “He is at a stage of his career where he needs to be playing regular football in order to continue his development.
“We could see when he came back to us that he had benefitted from featuring every week competitively down there.
“Sadly we can’t offer him what he needs at Rangers and we thank him for his efforts and wish him every success in the future.”
McCoist was yesterday forced to defend his summer recruitment drive – even though his first-team squad have now been asked to consider a 15 per cent pay cut.
The proposal was knocked back by the players following a dressing room summit on Thursday.
“I have no regrets. The fact of the matter is that I was given an option to bring players into the club, which I was more than willing to do, at the same time as bringing the budget down again,” he said.
