Warrenpoint Town chief Barry Gray insists sitting in the basement of the Premiership table is not where his team want to be – and they intend doing something about it, starting in Saturday’s clash against Glentoran at the Oval.

Although ‘Point have opened up an eight-point gap over bottom club Ards, Gray wants his battlers to focus on reeling in the teams above them – Coleraine and Ballinamallard United are only two in front.

“We will be going to the Oval in a positive frame of mind,” said Gray.

“Basically we are sitting one off the bottom – it’s not where we want to be.

“The lads are determined to catch the teams above us – that’s our ultimate aim. We want to look forward, not back.”

Warrenpoint are coming off the back on a morale boosting 1-1 draw with Crusaders even though they were down to 10 men for much of the match.

“It was a little bonus picking up a point in such difficult conditions,” added Gray.

“Not only was Darren sent off, but the pitch was in an awful state – perhaps the game should not have taken place.

“The boys regrouped and Marty Haveran managed to hit a second half equaliser.

“It was even more pleasing because we had quite a few players missing due to sickness that has hit out club over the past few weeks.

“We must now take that form with us to the Oval. On our last visit up there, we had a good first half, but were totally over-run in the second. It was not good enough – and the boys knew it.

“We now have a chance to put things right. In saying that, Glentoran are always formidable opponents.

“They may have lost Richard Clarke recently, but they still have plenty of players of rich quality. It will be a big test, but we are looking forward to it.

“We will go there with confidence and give it a go.”

Gray will be forced to reshuffle his pack due to Darren King’s dismissal against Crusaders, but he insists: “We have adequate cover, especially in defence.

“It gives other players the chance to come in and seize their chance.”
