FOOTBALL: Cup tie faces further delay

THE ongoing Irish Cup farce involving Larne and Newry looks set to rumble on.

Hopes of a delayed sixth round tie involving Newry and Loughgall taking place tomorrow were dashed when the IFA confirmed yesterday that the Showgrounds club will instead face Crusaders in the Carling Premiership.

Loughgall have also been rescheduled to travel to Limavady United in the Ladbrokes.com Championship.

The whole saga is a result of the ongoing fall-out from Newry's controversial fifth round clash with Larne on January 16.

Representatives of both Newry and Larne are to expected to attend a meeting with IFA chiefs next week in a bid to progress the situation.

The Irish FA last week awarded Newry City a 2-1 victory over Larne after their fifth round game was abandoned on 82 minutes following violent skirmishes involving both sets of players – a decision that led to Larne lodging an appeal.

Newry were originally fined 800 for their part in the brawl with Larne hit with a 1,200 penalty.

In addition to the fines Larne's Anthony Lagan was banned until May 31 with Robert White and Brian Neeson both suspended for two games and fined 75 each.

Larne manager Paul Millar got a four-game ban and Newry's Cullen Feeney was suspended for two games and fined 75.

Loughgall are due to play whoever emerges from the saga in a delayed sixth round tie, with Coleraine waiting for the winners of that clash in the quarter-finals.

Linfield ware scheduled to meet one of those four teams in the semi-final on April 10.
