FOOTBALL: Larne lodge appeal over brawl

LARNE FC have lodged an appeal against the IFA's decision to allow Newry City to progress in the Irish Cup.

The Association's Executive Committee this week ruled the result from the controversial fifth round tie between the clubs should stand.

Newry were leading 2-1 with 12 minutes to go when the match was abandoned after a mass brawl erupted between both sets of players.

The Bordermen are scheduled to play Loughgall tomorrow in a delayed sixth round tie, but now the Showgrounds club are resigned to that being postponed following confirmation of Larne's appeal.

"We have been notified of the appeal so that would mean Saturday's game is off," said Newry general manager Derek McEil.

Larne chairman Archie Smith said last night: "We are appealing against a number of things including the result standing and also the mention of Article 33 and the potential for more fines.

"The way this has been handled by the IFA is scandalous."
