FOOTBALL: Young hoping for McCabe exit
SCOTT Young hopes want-away midfielder Shane McCabe finalises a move to Portadown before tomorrow's transfer deadline.
McCabe has highlighted his desire to sign for the Shamrock Park club after they made an official inquiry about the 28-year-old last week.
The only stumbling block, however, appears to lie in the 10,000 price tag the Glens have suddenly slapped on the player's head – but negotiations are ongoing.
"I would hope that Shane is gone within the next couple of days," Young said.
"It was very disappointing to have a player who we signed for 13,000 from Dungannon stating he wants to be somewhere else.
"Last Monday night I spoke to him to tell him how well he was doing. I actually told him to take Monday nights off training because of the travelling involved.
"I then informed him there was an inquiry from Portadown, and he responded by saying he wants to talk to them. That knocked me for six.
"Over the subsequent days he stated he would rather go there. There is more money on the table. The Glens fans took to Shane. I couldn't have asked for any more from the lad.
"It is disappointing for everyone that he is going down that road.
"As far as I am concerned he is no longer part of this football club."
McCabe was placed on the transfer list back in May as part of a cost-cutting exercise at the Oval.
It is understood he was made available to other clubs on a free transfer, in a bid to slash the wage bill on Mersey Street.
But with a 10,000 asking fee now being attached to the player, there appears to have been a breakdown in communication between the club and their midfielder.
"I can understand Shane's position, but it was made clear he was on the transfer list because of the wages situation at this club. It had nothing to do with his performances," Young added.
"Shane maybe feels because he was on the list, that he had the right to speak to Portadown.
"But we hold his contract and he is employed by Glentoran Football Club. So we will decide if he talks to anyone.
"But I have told him to make a deal happen. It is in his own interest."
If McCabe leaves before Tuesday's transfer deadline, Young admits it is unlikely he will get the chance to bring in a new face.
"It is unlikely that anyone will come in before Tuesday," he said.
"If players leave the club this summer then I hope there will be the chance to bring in one or two new faces in January."
