GOLF: McIlroy cleared to play Tucson
RORY McIlroy has been cleared to play in next week's Accenture WGC Match Play in Tucson.
The 20-year-old saw a specialist on Monday after returning from Dubai, where he finished sixth in defence of his Desert Classic title.
The world number seven revealed after Saturday's round that he had been 'strapped up pretty good' but thankfully specialists have discovered nothing worse than a 'slight nerve impingement in his lower back'.
"It's just a build-up and it's been at me for a while, and the more the week progressed the more it troubled me," added McIlroy who has been working with South African physio Cornell Driesson to try to manage the discomfort.
"I can still swing the club OK, but bending down and doing things like putting and picking the ball out of the cup hurts.
"The scan is precautionary and I get one every year and I will be fine for the Match Play. I just need to give it some rest."
After the Match Play McIlroy is set to play the Honda Classic, WGC - CA Championship at Doral, Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and Shell Houston Open before April's Masters at Augusta.
"All the early season practice took its toll last week and his back began to ache at the weekend," said McIlroy's manager Andrew Chandler.
"It was decided to get it checked and thankfully there is nothing serious".
McIlroy will continue rest, relaxation and practice this week before flying to Tucson at the weekend.
