“It was different to a normal event. I was okay, surprisingly,” said the recently crowned Irish Amateur Open champion.

“I think it was because there wasn’t that many people about, which wasn’t a bad thing. I hit a nice one down the first. Hit a nice seven-iron into the green and that settled me and I got into a good rhythm then.

“It was miserable, it was wet and cold. It was just like playing Royal Dublin on a normal day. It was good, I really enjoyed it. The two guys (Ollie Fisher and Sebastian Gros) I played with helped as well. They were chatting away and made things a bit easier.”

The 28-year-old grabbed three birdies in total, mixed in with two double-bogeys and a bogey to finish the day in a share of 93rd position.

He added: “Overall, I’m happy with how I played bar two swings. For my first Irish Open, I’m happy with how I handled the situation. Driving the ball is key. If you hit it in the rough, it’s going to make life hell. Out of the 18 holes, I missed one or two fairways. It could have been a lot better.”

Ireland's two other amateur competitors in the field, Jack Hume (+5) and John-Ross Galbraith (+6) face uphill tasks to make the cut today.
