The leading contenders for the Cathedral Eye Clinic sponsored North of Ireland Championship made smooth progress at Royal Portrush yesterday.

Daniel Holland (Castle) topped qualifying on 136, following up an opening 70 with a 66 on the Dunluce. The 24-year-old, who spent the winter working at golf club in Florida, carded seven birdies and one bogey in his round.

Holland, who won the Mullingar Scratch Cup last year, took a cautious approach off the tee using a two iron and a three wood to keep the ball in play, a tactic that clearly worked as he recorded seven birdies and a single bogey in his round.

Irish internationals Reeve Whitson (Mourne) and Rory McNamara (Headfort GC) also eased into the match-play stages on 136 after both carded rounds of 69 on the Dunluce yesterday.

McNamara, who will turn professional at the end of this event, hit 15 greens in regulation but was unhappy with his putting performance.

“I lost a bit of concentration during the middle of the round and three putted the 11th but shook myself and birdied three out of the next four,” said Rory.

Whitson, who played alongside McNamara, followed the example of Holland and focused on staying out of trouble.

Reeve went to the turn in level par 35 with a birdie at the second and a bogey at the seventh. He birdied the 10th and 11th, dropped a shot at the par four 16th and closed with birdies at the 17th and 18th.

“I played nicely. It was all about hitting fairways and greens today,” said Reeve who credited an up and down par from the back of the 13th as key to keeping his round on track.

Defending champion Chris Selfridge (Moyola Park) made sure of his place in the match-play stages with a second round 70 on The Dunluce. Selfridge finished on 142, the same mark as Irish Close champion John Ross Galbraith (Whitehead) who recorded five birdies, an eagle, a bogey and two double-bogeys in his round of 70.

“I didn’t play well on Monday but I played much better today,” said Galbraith.

“I hit the range a bit earlier today to work on a few things and I was certainly hitting it a bit better today. I’m looking forward to the match-play stages, I love it.”

The highest profile casualty after the second round of qualifying was former Irish Close champion, Robbie Cannon, who finished on 152.
