Rory McIlroy, the hottest golfer on the planet, is not thinking about taking the torch from Tiger Woods as the sport’s next dominant player.
McIlroy, winner of the British Open, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship in his last three starts, spent a day earlier this week on the promotional trail in New York with fellow Nike spokesman Woods
The 25-year-old enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with Woods (who is still recovering from back issues) but is entirely focused on cementing his own place in the game.
“I am just going to keep playing my golf and play as good as I can and I’ll see where that takes me,” said the World Number One.
“I don’t think any torch has been passed and I don’t think any torch will ever be passed because I never think of myself in that way.
“I never see myself like that. I see myself as a golfer on the PGA Tour that wants to win tournaments and wants to be the best that he can be.
“I don’t see the need for me to carry any sort of torch. I just want to win golf tournaments.”
Furthermore, Rory has no intentions of taking his foot off the gas.
“For me it would be very gratifying to know that I have finished the season off well,” he added.
“I could just say you know, I ‘ve had a great year, it’s been an awesome summer and I will just see what happens over the next few weeks but I want to finish the season well.
“I want to be up there in contention week in and week out. I feel that the season I have had deserves a good finish.”
