Rory McIlroy was left disappointed with an opening round of 70 at the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

The former world number one had been five under par in his round but let three shots slip to finish yesterday on two under par.

Graeme McDowell is one better on three under, four behind American Russell Henley who leads after a 65.

McIlroy was five under par for his first 11 holes but dropped shots at the third, sixth and eighth.

It was the sort of up asnd down round that has frustrated McIlroy and his fans in the past few years.

As usual there were great things from Rory but then the bad parts of his game took over.

“I played really solid for the first 11 holes but let a few shots get away from me at the end.

“Guys are going low so 70 is going to be pretty average by the end of the day.

“But I feel like my game is in good enough shape that I can go out tomorrow and shoot something in the 60s.

“It’s a course that has frustrated me in the past but I feel like I learnt how to play it last year.

“I’m coming in disappointed with a 70 when maybe a couple of years ago I would have been happy. I have work to do on my game.”
