Rory McIlroy’s hopes of a final-day charge at the Deutsche Bank Championship

in Boston faltered as a one-under 70 left him in a tie for fifth with John Senden.

The Northern Ireland star, who started the day just two shots back, birdied the fourth but lost momentum with back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and sixth.

McIlroy hit back with birdies at seven and eight but his difficult day continued with bogeys at 10 and 12. Two birdies in the final three holes elevated him to -11 and he remains in second place in the FedEx Cup standings.

Chris Kirk carded a final-round five-under 66 to win the e vent by two shots and go top of the FedEx Cup standings.

The American compiled a second straight bogey-free round to take victory on 15-under.
