GOLF: McIlroy sets his sights on the Tiger

RORY McIlroy moved a step closer to a dream meeting with Tiger Woods by winning his opening match at the Accenture Matchplay in Arizona.

The 19-year-old was never behind on his way to a 2&1 win over South African Louis Oosthuizen.

McIlroy was pleased after making it through to the second round.

"It was good, I probably didn't play my best golf but I did enough to get through," said McIlory.

"It's a fun golf course and it's nice to get playing matchplay once in a while.

"I got two up on Louis after nine and then I was just hanging in, trying to make it stress free and I was able to do that."

McIlroy will play American Ryder Cup star, Hunter Mahan, later on Thursday, and the Holywood teenager was trying not to think too far ahead.

"I can't let myself think too far ahead. Tiger still has to win his second match as well," he added.

"I'd love to play him. It would be a great challenge playing against the best player in the world."

Graeme McDowell saw his challenge come to an end in yesterday's first round against former Masters champion Zach Johnson.

McDowell lost the seventh and eighth to fall two behind at the turn and never recovered as Johnson ran out a 3&1 winner.

Triple major champion, Padraig Harrington was two down with four to play against American Pat Perez.
