ARMAGH will have an early opportunity to prove that last season’s lowly Premier League finish was a false reflection of their ability when they face Lurgan in the first round of the Irish Senior Cup on Saturday.
The Orchard County girls finished in seventh place in the table last season and only got out of the drop zone near the end of the campaign.
In contrast Lurgan qualified for the Irish Hockey League after finishing in third place behind champions Pegasus and Ballymoney.
Armagh are currently languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table with no points on the board after four matches.
However the two teams immediately above them, Portadown and Victorians, only have a point apiece so there won’t be any panic buttons pressed just yet as far as Armagh are concerned.
Their recent performances have been encouraging and they will be dwelling on those on Saturday and not what has gone before.
Last weekend it took some fine saves from Ards goalkeeper Naoimi McKnight to keep the Orchard County attack at bay and a 4-2 defeat was no disgrace.
Amy Stewart looks a class act despite the fact she has the added responsibility of wearing the capatain’s armband this season.
Sian McKinnon adds a lot of experience to what is primarily a youthful squad based around schoolgirls.
