With the new year just around the corner it’s normally the time to hand out the accolades and reflect on the 12 months that have just passed.
I will resist the temptation to name a club of the year, player of the year etc lest I be accused of bias.
So I will restrict myself to just one accolade - the unsung heroine of the year who is certainly had a busy 2013.
The notional award goes to Ulster Elks player Caroline Smith who is more than a mere player with the Jordanstown outfit.
She is the one-woman band who is in charge of a new website entitled Passback Hockey and it is literally a thankless task.
No one is more aware of the difficulty of obtaining information from clubs than I am - there are very few who are proactive.
But Caroline, who doesn’t receive a penny for her efforts, still plugs away and manages to come up with the goods as the site is a mine of information on the local game.
And she manages to cover the broad spectrum of hockey in the province from the men’s and women’s senior game through inter-pros and schools competition.
Yet some people have had the audacity to criticise Caroline on social media despite her unstinting efforts to promote the sport.
