Ireland will hardly have time to draw breath when they will be off to play in their second international tournament in less than a week.
The National side has just returned from a very successful Champions Challenge tournament in Malaysia, where they finished in fourth spot.
And next Monday the squad will fly out to Barcelona for a 4-Nations tournament against Russia (19th) Wales (30th) and hosts Spain who are 10th in the World but they have been ranked in first place for next month’s World Cup in Holland.
Nine Ulster players have been included in the squad, which sees the return of Timmy Cockram and Michael Watt who both missed the trip to Malaysia.
Irish Coach Craig Fulton has selected a squad of 20 for the tour and this will be Fulton’s third away tournament after just a month in the role and an opportunity which he is utilizing to see as many players tested on the international stage.
He said “I have only been in the job for about a month now and Spain is the 3rd test series of which I can see another group of Irish players compete against top opposition.
“This is testament to the current depth in Irish men’s hockey at present . I look forward to seeing this new team compete and build on the platform laid in Champs Challenge 1.”
The national side has a busy summer ahead as they continue to build for their respective World League 2’s – the summer schedule will be released next week.
