Lisnagarvey reached their third consecutive final but they had to dig deep to win this one beating Instonians 3-2.
Inst, who were looking to reach their first Kirk Cup final in a decade, took the lead in the fourth minute and it was Stuart McNiece, who was playing in Garvey colours until this season, who did the damage.
But just after the first quarter, Peter MacDonnell levelled it for Garvey, jumping onto the loose ball, after James Lorimer’s initial shot rebounded off the upright.
With five minutes of the first half remaining, Paul Cleghorne edged Inst back into the lead with a well executed penalty corner.
However, their lead was short-lived as Mark Raphael had Garvey on level terms two minutes after the restart.
And with 10 minutes remaining, Timmy Cockram wrapped it up for Garvey, with one of his trademark penalty corners which flew into the net.
Inst refused to give up, and perhaps if they had played the second half the way they finished the final 10 minutes, the result would have been different. But it is Garvey who go into the Boxing Day final and waiting for them will be Annadale.
Speaking after the game Errol Lutton, in his first season as head coach, was delighted to see his side reach the final.
He said: “I’m looking forward to my first final as coach with Garvey. It is a big day for the players, but the satisfaction for me is coaching them.”
So, did he have any thoughts when they were trailling 2-1, that they were going to loose? “Absolutely not. I knew that we could come back. There is a great belief in this side. The team has changed a wee bit from last year with some older players stepping down.
“We have brought some younger players into the squad and I thought Sean Murray played very well along with Daniel Nelson and James Lorimer who are also both at school.”
Was he surprised that he will be playing Annadale in the final? “Not at all, I know Andy and Chris and what they are doing with Dale. And when you look at the team list, they have guys who are playing Ulster and Irish Under 21’s and they are a very good side.”
