PEGASUS will have to win the Irish Hockey League if they are to qualify for Europe next season after a 5-2 defeat by UCD in Saturday’s Irish Senior Cup quarter final clash in Dublin.
In fact they could well come up against the Dublin students in the IHL knock out stages as they did last season losing at the semi-final stage.
Now Ballymoney carry Ulster hopes in the semi finals but Ards could join them in the hat for the last four.
Their game with UCC in Cork was postponed due to difficult travelling conditions which at least saved the Co Down the expense of a wasted journey.
The rematch has been scheduled for February 16th when they will at least have defender Lynn Mills back from holiday.
On Saturday, UCD led Pegasus 2-0 by the 26th minute and made it three shortly after the break.
However Suzanne Beaney gave Pegasus some hope when she scored from a penalty corner shortly afterwards.
But the home side scored two more before Arlene Boyle’s late penalty corner consolation.
In the only other Cup tie to survive the freeze Railway Union had something to spare in beating Dublin rivals Hermes 2-0.
Hermes forced a penalty corner in the first minute but Grace O’Flanagan’s save was her only action of the entire 70 mintes.
From Railway’s third corner Kate Lloyd’s reverse stick shot struck a leg and Kate Dillon converted the resulting penalty stroke.
Another set piece saw Emma Smyth pouncing on the rebound to make it 2-0 after the initial shot had been saved.
Railway, who are coached by former Armagh boss, Mick McKinnon, dominated most of the rest of the game without being able to add to their tally.
