Pegasus staged a superb comeback to lift the Ulster Premier League title with a 5-3 victory over Ards who had led 3-1 after only 18 minutes of a magnificent contest watched by more than 300 spectators at the Co Down venue on Tuesday night.
A win for either side would have seen them take the honours but, at one stage the champions would have gladly settled for a draw which would have left them needing a victory over Ballymoney in their final game.
It was the proverbial game of two halves with Ards dominating the first and then Pegasus taking control.
Vanessa Surgeoner hit a hat trick as Pegasus claimed the trophy for the 15th time in 16 years thanks to a double strike in the last four minutes.
“It was one of our most pleasing title wins and Ards are a super team although after coming back from 3-1 down we’d probably have been glad of the draw,” said Pegasus coach Michelle Rainey.
Amy Benson put Ards ahead in the fifth minute but Ruth Maguire levelled matters from a penalty corner.
Sara Alexander and Becky Weir then scored to put Ards in the driving seat before Surgeoner pulled one back before the break..
The Irish international striker hit the equaliser in the 55th minute and then made it 5-3 late on after Robyn Chambers had put Pegasus ahead for the first time in the match four minutes from the end.
